The Citizens Three-Nil Man United: Hemp finds the net in City dominant win.
Much like bad weather swept through the northern region the prior day, City swept the visitors away at the Etihad. It was a statement three-nil victory for their manager's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that truly announced their championship potential as they strengthened their place at the league summit.
Successive Losses for Manchester United
This result represented successive Women's Super League losses for the United manager's side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, putting them seven points off the league leaders with their trophy ambitions severely dented.
United’s capacity to balance league and continental soccer with a limited roster has been a widely debated topic since they earned a place in the UCL. Reviewing the schedule, it always felt like this was the period that would truly test this ability. Sadly for the opposition, they appeared tired throughout, the memorable win against the French side clearly having had an impact.
Team Changes
The United manager had attempted to make changes with a handful of alterations. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all added freshness, although the omission of the on-form Malard to the substitutes caused surprise.
City, in contrast, have no such workload issues. Andrée Jeglertz made one adjustment from the previous win over Everton with Hemp making her first start since returning from injury.
Dominant First Half
The trouble started to build for the United boss and his squad from the kickoff. This was a exhibition of the quality from City whose energetic offense controlled and tore United open with a superb initial 45 minutes performance that saw them net a trio in 21 minutes.

Initial Opportunities
The warning signs came early when Miedema used her physicality to muscle Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot past the post. The Red Devils had a number of forays forwards, their long-ball tactic giving them alternatives in the wings but they could not trouble Yamashita. City, on the other hand, controlled possession, teasing their opposition and trying to lure them of their defensive shape.
Goals Galore
They converted their dominance with almost thirty minutes played when Aoba Fujino won the hosts a set-piece. A cross to the back post was directed across goal by Shaw for Knaak to head in. It was City’s 7th headed goal of the season.
They increased their lead with an additional two goals just before the half-time. When Rose was permitted to advance through the midfield from the back, the field became spacious for City. Four minutes later, they had a third after a quick change in the ball saw Hemp given the space to fire a shot home from distance.
After the Break
The primary substitution came from the United manager at the interval as Melvine Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was futile to shift the momentum of the game. Former Manchester City player Park came most likely to score, striking the upright, but the away team were offensively poor and failed to produce a one shot on goal.
The home side, in contrast, could have increased their cushion when a superb Vivianne Miedema pass sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it was insignificant to the winning team. Having failed to beat any side who ended above them the previous campaign, the manager's side now have victories against Arsenal and United to place them in a favorable situation after nine matches.
